What Proposition 65 is

Proposition 65, officially the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires warnings to be given to California consumers when they may be exposed to chemicals the State of California has identified as causing cancer or reproductive toxicity. The warnings are meant to help consumers make informed decisions about their exposure to those chemicals from the products they use.

The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) administers the program and publishes the list of chemicals, which includes more than 850 chemicals. In August 2016 OEHHA adopted new regulations, effective August 30, 2018, that changed the information a Proposition 65 warning must contain.
